Swing baby, yeah!

Monday, April 11th, 2005

Well, we’re due an election on May 5th, so I’ve been looking at the BBC’s coverage. As ever, the BBC outdo themselves. I’ll be honest, the BBC website would be a dull drab affair, full of ads and no content (much like ITVs really) without the licence fee.

Anyway, I’ve been playing with the venerable swingometer! It really wouldn’t be an election without it, but its nice to see it updated every election to something new. Now we have an interactive, Flash-based toy for us at home. Its got some really interesting info in it, including which seats are at risk in a swing, and info about the seats. All very good stuff. Its great to be able to do this – I can see myself playing with that damn thing a lot. This is probably one of the few good, legitimate uses for Flash I’ve seen in a long time.

Dry skin

Saturday, April 9th, 2005

My knuckles look like I’ve been having a set-to with a brick wall. Trouble is, I haven’t. Since I had my bout of sickness a few months back, I’ve been washing my hands a lot more (yeah, so I’m paranoid), and I think its drying out my skin a hell of a lot. I did a lot of wandering about in the cold with no gloves on, so I think that’s contributed to the cracked, dry skin on the back of my hands.

It was suggested that I try some E45 cream to sort it out, so I got a small tube and was applying some every night before bed. It certainly sorted it out, and my hands were fine, so I thought I’d stop using it. I was about to run out anyway, so I thought I’d just use up the tube and that would be fine. Things were fine, but then a week or two ago the weather got cold again, a few cold mornings later, and my hands are all dry and like sandpaper again.

Today, I went and got a little tub of E45, and I’m going to start slathering that on my hands again and hope for the best.

I’ve been ripping my CDs to AAC in iTunes today also. I’ve done about 45 CDs, but there’s still quite a few to do. I could do with investing in a new CD storage unit thingy to put them all in, as at the moment most of them just get randomly piled up whereever. Obviously not such a clever idea in the long term.

I also today picked up a little cleaning kit from my opticians. I’m forever cleaning my glasses and I don’t always get them clean enough, which if you’re in a hurry to clean them, or are going to be driving at night or something, is never a clever idea. I could get contacts, but the idea of putting bits of plastic IN my eye kinda puts me off. In the past, cleaning my lenses usually included screencleaner/glass cleaner and various cloths and tissues. Now I’ve got some proper lense cleaner and a decent lense cloth, so hopefully I’ll be able to get them nice and clean with minimal fuss. Whenever I have them cleaned at the opticians they always manage to get them so clean you can’t tell there’s any lenses in there. Or maybe they do just take the lense out.

Hmmm.

AA See

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

We’ve all heard of MP3, the compression system for audio which gives us small sizes for our music. I’ve got something of a collection now, mostly of CDs I’ve bought. Since I’ve got my iPod, I’ve noticed quite how messy my music library is. Some stuff is tagged badly, some stuff isn’t tagged at all, and in most cases, band names differ based on spelling. Its basically a mess.

I’ve been toying with the idea of re-ripping everything anyway, but recently started looking at AAC, the new audio standard which superceeds MP3. The quality is much better, and the files much smaller, so it works well. The problem is, its a patented system, so most support is only in commercial software (such as iTunes), or you have to compile stuff yourself.

So at the moment, I’m mostly just experimenting. The quality seems good no matter what, but there’s other issues with compatability and versions, so its a struggle to find something that works everywhere I want. It’s a fiddly process, but its worth it I think.

Oooo, stringy

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

My trusty Washburn acoustic guitar was starting to sound a bit rough of late, so I thought I’d restring it at the weekend. I opened the little drawer were I keep spare strings to find a few million boxes of Elixir Electric strings, in varying guages, and two incomplete sets of Martin strings both missing their D strings (I used to break that string a lot). So I huffed a bit and toddled off to Stringbusters. I’d always used Elixir strings, as they have a coating on them to make them last longer. Whilst this is true, the coating tends to fray and wear away over time, so the sound seems to dull quite a bit. If I changed my strings more often, it wouldn’t be an issue, but I don’t as I find re-stringing a traumatising experience at the best of times, so I put it off until I either break a string, or really need to do it.

So, I decided I’d try a different brand of strings this time. I’d got some flatwound strings on my other guitar, which whilst nice and squeek free (no fretting noise!) I wasn’t keen on them in general, so I had a look to see what other options I had. Stringbusters tend to sell every type of string you can think of, so I was spoilt for choice. I eventually chose some Firewire Phosphor Bronze .12-.54 strings. Not a bad price (about 8 quid I think) and they looked good. I also got some new bridge pins as I’d removed mine previously with a pair of pliers and mangled them a bit, so I thought it’d be a nice idea to get some new ones.

The strings and pins came today, and I set about restringing. Always willing to learn new things, I went and had a look at Frets.com and found their guide for re-stringing. It was a different method to how I’d done it in the past. My method involved lots of fiddling about until the string decided to go around the post properly. The Frets.com guide was much better, and seemed to work, even if it did take a while for me to work out the pictures. As I was too busy trying to follow the guide, I didn’t notice I put the wrong string on the wrong place, so I had to move it down one before I broke it.

After all that, I tuned up, and it doesn’t sound too bad. The strings might be a little bit too raspy for my liking, but it might just take a little while for me to get used to them. New strings are always very bright for a while, so I’ll give them a week or two to settle down before I start worrying too much.

Traffic – AGAIN, and what day is this?

Monday, April 4th, 2005

God I hate traffic! There’s still roadworks on the way I go home, so, bright idea of the century, I go the other way home. Usually a bit slower, but at least it’ll be moving. Well, it was, albeit slowly. There was roadworks on the way out of Wycombe, and more in Princes Risborough, so I decided to hit the back roads and try and bypass it. Took me the best part of an hour to get home in the end. Still, never mind.

On my way home, I was a little bit fuzzy as to quite what day it is today. It truely is a horrible feeling, and it happens now and then for no real reason. Considering yesterday was Sunday, you’d think I’d have some inkling of what day it is, but no. I was so unsure as to what day it was, I actually looked at my watch to check. Its like I’m in one of those films where the lead character has to go buy a newspaper to check the date. Well – not quite that bad, but close enough.

So yeah, today is… um. Monday?

I forgot

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

I went all the way into town yesterday, convinced I wanted something, but when I got there I had no idea what it was. Annoying because I went with a friend, but he needed something anyway, so it wasn’t a totally wasted journey.

I’ve got to find something more interesting to do on Sundays. Or rather, I’ve got to find something I want to do on a Sunday. There’s plenty I could do, but I don’t ever feel inclined to do it. I always want to do something else, but I never actually know what that ‘something else’ is. I usually end up wasting a day as a result.

Oh well. Suppose I’ll just go watch some TV instead.

Jason Mraz and holes in the road

Friday, April 1st, 2005

Totally unrelated mind…

Jason Mraz – I bought his live DVD recently and watched it today. I’m a sucker for live DVDs in general, especially if its an artist I like. Anyway, its pretty good. 5.1 audio, so you feel like you’re pretty much there, and the crowd are really into it. The only thing I didn’t like was the fact the concert was a bit cut up. Its nicer to have it all as one piece – no diving off to tell us something else or show something else. An important part of any concert, for me at least, is the bits between songs. The band banter, the interaction with the audience all that had been replaced with snippits of interviews with Mraz. OK, not a bad thing in itself, but I think they would have been better in a feature of their own. Still, I’m glad I bought the DVD.

Holes in the road – roadworks on the way home today. There’s a roundabout near where my employers will soon be moving to, and quite a few companies have been digging it up lately. Transco had it opened up for some time, and now BT are having a dig. They put traffic lights up to keep the traffic moving, but the road into town is a sod, and slow at the best of times, so roadworks make it worse. So, I went home a different route, and had a nice drive home.

And its Friday, which is always nice!

On a slightly geekier note, I just started to upgrade Gordon, my linux box to Gentoo 2005.0. I started an emerge and it reckons it has 237 packages to update. I think I’m gunna be here some time.
