Ska’d

I today saw a Ska band called Freetown in the town as part of the town centre’s summer of live music thing. A pretty good band – they had a quite nice tight sound, and sounded pretty well practiced. I’ll listen to most musical genres, and Ska is one I like quite a bit. I’m a sucker for basslines – a Ska song without a good bassline isn’t a Ska song. Plus the addition of horns, and some funky guitar playing, its a good bouncy thing to listen to. It was nice to be sitting in town under one of the monuments, bobbing my head to the beats and sounds from this band. They played a few covers, including a Ska’d up version of Marc Bolan and T.Rex’s Hot Love, plus a few originals.

As they were playing, dark clouds were forming and the wind was getting up, but it didn’t really matter. They were pushing a good groove across, and people were grooving along with it. We could just as well have been sitting in Jamaica. OK, so it wasn’t quite that good, but it was still a nice feeling.

They were doing two sets, so I only watched the first one, but that was still about 45 minutes or so. I bought their CD, Easy Street. Its not bad – some good old fashioned Ska there.

All good stuff :)
