WordPress 2.0.1

Friday, February 24th, 2006

It never really pays to be totally bleeding edge with software, so when I noticed WordPress 2.0.1 came out I hung back for a while. Here I am three weeks (or so) later finally upgrading the thing. Being a point release there’s nothing majorly different, but supposedly some bug fixes. I never really noticed many bugs in the first place, but maybe that’s just me.

A Quote

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Here’s a quote I saw today on my Google homepage thingy:

“The intelligent man is one who has successfully fulfilled many accomplishments, and is yet willing to learn more.”
- Ed Parker

Very true! Some people really do hit the nail on the head with their observations of life.

A Podcast

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Not mine mind. Everybody’s favourite folk-alt-rock band Barenaked Ladies are doing one, or at least Ed Robertson is. It seems all us rabied fans have been clamouring to get it and it’s shot up Apples podcast charts. It currently sits at number 24 in all UK podcasts, so it’s doing well!

The podcast is recorded in the studio, as part of the ongoing recording of the next album. It started with Ed buying the new Apple iLife ’06, which includes an updated Garage Band capable of producing podcasts out of the box. Pretty impressive I thought!

It’s a 10-minute, rambling affair, but strangely compelling listening. The BNL Blog always gave an insight into what was going on during recording, but the podcast tends to capture just that bit more, including maybe a little atmosphere if somebody happens to be in the vicinity.

I listen regularly anyway!

Remember me

Friday, February 17th, 2006

Many websites ask for logins. Many website will enable you to save your details in a cookie, to save you logging in every time you go there. For those that don’t, you might choose to let your web browser remember the details for you. For some reason, eBay seems hell bent on letting me do any of those.

I never used to save my details on eBay, because it would stop me from accidentally bidding on something I didn’t want, or making a rediculous bid. It also made me think twice about things. I’d often enter a bid amount, then be asked to log in, and whilst doing this I’d ponder the bid a bit more and realise I actually didn’t want it.

Lately I’ve been selling a few things on eBay, so I’ve been in and out of My eBay to check my auctions. I decided to finally save the details, but it would seem eBay is fighting back. It will randomly remember it, and other times completely forget and I have to log in. I thought for a while it was because I would log in both at home and at work, the eBay login system would see different IPs and balk, killing the cookie. Fair enough I thought, but it doesn’t seem that this is the case any more.

My guess is that this is one of those ‘works fine in Internet Explorer’ things that I see so much these days. If it isn’t then I humbly retract this, but I honestly think it probably is. It’s about time web developers tested such trivial things more, and ensured these things do work well cross-platform.

eBay

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

I had a few aborted attempts at selling stuff through eBay in the past. I tried, and failed, to shift things in the past and fell foul of buyers trying to get money out of me, or who just never came through with the cash.

I thought I’d have another go recently, and last week managed to sell an old Psion 5 series PDA I’d had knocking about for ages. I’ve been listing a few other random bits of computer kit, so you can check out my auctions here if you care enough to do so! I’m mainly doing it to make space in here. I’ve got lots of odds and ends, so I’m trying to get rid of those, then I can buy new toys!

Busy week

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

I had a week off work, yet it seemed more like two weeks. I spent a very busy week getting the car serviced, MOTd and generally fiddled with. I then had a dental visit (checkup and a filling, so nothing major), then spent two days moving stuff around and putting in two new desks. I’ve actually ended the week feeling more tired than when I started. I think I could probably do with a week off to recover from my week off!

Even so, it’s been an eventful week, so it’s not all bad. My new desks are very nice – for years I had various wierd and wonderful designs, with multiple levels, drawers, sliding things and other oddities. Nothing ever quite worked for me though. I always found the best bet was something that was just big and flat. It affords the most flexible approach, as your only limitation is the space on the top of the desk. Well, that and how much weight it will support. I managed to find a nice desk in Argos which is just a big, flat cantilever desk. I actually bought two and put them in a ‘L’ shape, and basically planted myself in the middle of it. My next step is to rid myself of the three spare PCs hiding beneath, then get a Mac Mini to replace them. Any space savings are good!
