Guster

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I’ve known about Guster for some time. The hardened Barenaked Ladies fan will know them as they have played with BNL a few times, and accompanied them on the Ships and Dips cruise, as well as had various working relationships with each other over the years.

I’ve always meant to look into them more, and find out more about the band and their music. There’s a lot of common ground in terms of the fan base, and the music genre, so I thought I’d have to have a look. The only Guster song I’d (knowingly) heard was from an album called For the Kids, a charity album produced a few years back by Nettwerk for a VH1 kids charity. The album features covers (and some originals I think) of some well known songs by various well known artists, including BNL and Guster.

I bought For the Kids recently, and was listening to the Guster track, I’ve Got To Be Clean and it stuck me how good it was. So I duly went off to Amazon and picked up a copy of Guster’s latest, Ganging Up On The Sun.

I’m quite impressed with it. It’s the folk-rock jamboree I was hoping for. More folk than rock I think, but that’s nice as BNL are more rock than folk these days, so I can see how they balance each other out. There’s plenty of jangly guitars, mandolin bouncing in and out, and VERY tight vocal harmonies. If there’s something I do love, it’s good harmonies. They catch my ear big-time.

Must say, I look forward to getting some more Guster albums.

Maybe you should drive

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I suppose you could say I’m still learning to drive in a way. My current car (Mk 7 Fiesta, Facelift) is a wonderful car, but being a 1.25L engine on a fairly large five-door body, it means it doesn’t have much go in it. Or at least, that’s what I thought!

This car has a rev counter, which my last two Kas didn’t have. I’d been changing up gears at 2500 revs, which seemed to work fine. As far as engine noise goes, it sounded like the right point to change up. The trouble is, it meant I didn’t have a massive amount of ‘go’ in it for escaping bad junctions and the like. I always changed up at that point because the engine would whine a bit, and it didn’t sound too good.

Having driven the car more, I’ve found that in fact, if I break through 3000 revs, there’s quite a bit of pickup, which means I can pull away a LOT faster. Now, admittedly it doesn’t help my fuel economies any, but it’s nice to know I actually have a bit more power in that engine than I originally thought. When I first started driving it, I think it was being a little more careful on the accelerator anyway. It’s not like I used to really drive my Kas particularly hard anyway, but they were pretty small, light bodies with a 1.3L engines, so they had a fair bit of pickup. By my reckoning, this modern 1.25 has probably about the same power as a 1996 (when my Ka was new) 1.4 or similar.

Like I say, I’m still learning. This stuff comes with experience, but I’m happy to find I can get more out of my car than I originally thought.

Cherry Dancer (or “Tiny Ghosts”)

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

I mentioned a few weeks ago eagerly awaiting the Cherry Ghost album, and it has since arrived. I’ve listened to it a few times, and it’s definitely a grower. There’s the standout tracks – Mathematics and People Help The People, but the rest don’t stand up as much as say ‘LISTEN TO ME!!!’ in quite the same way. Still, there’s a good vibe on this album. It’s good listening music. I’ve listened to it in the car a couple of times, and it doesn’t suit that environment well. It’s better to be listened to at home, or on headphones in a quiet place (like at work). Dead Man’s Suit and False Alarm are looking to be other favourites though. Mountain Bird also.

I also recently got the Tiny Dancers album. This is a good album also. Unfortunately, I’ve mostly listened to it on my iPod, so I’ve yet to make much of a distinction between the tracks – a lot flow into each other a little too easily. That said, they’re all in a good place, so it’s not a bad thing necessarily. Hannah, We Know is a great song. Ashes and Diamonds is also good as it grows from something quiet to something quite large toward the end. I’d quite like to see Tiny Dancers live, as I understand they do a good live show.

All things considered though, these are two good albums!  And, even better, both are home-grown bands.

Apple – Fix! Now!

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

As both of my blog readers are already aware, I use iTunes for my music. I’ve been using it since I’ve had an iPod as it was the most logical thing to do. I’ve grown to really quite like it, and if you use dual monitors like I do, it’s quite nice to have open on one or the other monitor and just flick back to now and then.

I’ve been using Vista for a few months now, and initial reports said iTunes + Vista was not a good mix. There were various horror stories of iPods being corrupted, and iTunes generally not working. Whilst I’ve had issues with sound conking out, and general oddities, I’ve not had anything that serious. Apple still seem to deny any sort of support for Vista, but a few point releases of iTunes have been released since, and each version has gotten slightly better.

There’s one stupid, stupid bug that still afflicts me though. I can’t play any of my downloaded videos! I’ve got a few videoblogs I’ve subscribed to, and downloaded a few videos from the music store. If I try and play them, they get a few seconds in, then the video just sticks. I did some digging a while ago and it seems it’s some sort of odd incompatibility between SATA hard disks, and playing videos. If I copy the video to an IDE hard disk, or a network drive, it works fine! It’s totally nonsensical. Every new release of iTunes, I go try my videos again, but so far, it’s still not working.

So Apple, FIX IT!
