The Death of High Fidelity : Rolling Stone

A great article for all you musos out there.

I’ve been toying with the notion of re-ripping my favourite albums to Apple’s lossless compression. Disk space is cheap these days, so it might be worth doing to retain some of the fidelity.

I noticed that the Barenaked Ladies albums get progressively louder over the years, and not just because they’re playing more electric guitars than they used to. Everything to Everyone is a lot louder than Gordon, for example. I have noticed Barenaked Ladies are Me/Men are both not quite so loud though.

The Death of High Fidelity : Rolling Stone

Subtlety is lost on people these days. If it’s not kicking you in the face, people don’t care.

"Nope, wrong"

Look at this article: link. Ignoring the actual content for now, one thing struck me. The AWFUL typography.

There’s this obsession in some circles that using double grave accents (`), in the place of quotation marks (") is OK. I think it stems from the fact that we’re taught that when using quotation marks, they are like little versions of ‘66′ and ‘99′ - or at least I was.

That’s fine if you’re hand-writing something, but on a computer screen it just looks wrong. The ’standard’ quotation marks are just two simple lines, and some people don’t see this as being correct.

Some software, such as Microsoft Word, will automatically convert them to look like the more typographically correct versions. Other software, on the other hand, won’t, so they work around this by manually entering the double grace accents, and to close, double apostrophes. Without any proper kerning, it just looks silly. Consider the following sentence:

“Oh dear, I appear to have broken it.”

"Oh dear, I appear to have broken it."

As far as the typography goes, the latter is correct. The spacing is correct, and it looks cleaner. On a PC screen, it doesn’t matter much if those quotation marks are any particular shape, as they appear to be roughly three or four simple pixels in a line. It’s patently obvious what it is.

Here’s a screenshot of some quotes in Word 2007:

quotes

You can see it has done what I said it would do - converted the quotes to a more typographically-correct version. This is with the two most popular fonts, Times New Roman and Arial.

So what’s the point of this rant? Well, it’s the fact that some people don’t appreciate good punctuation. I know I make mistakes, but I try to weed them out and do things right. Others just don’t know the difference in the first place, or they do, but they’re trying to prove something by fighting things.

A Joke

A man goes into a seafood restaurant and asks to see the dishes of the day.

The waiter wheels over a trolley and the man examines the dishes. "I’ll have the little green squid with the hairy lip please" says the man. "O.K." replies the waiter and calls out "Gervais!!" A little French chef appears with a large knife.

The waiter instructs the chef to kill the little green squid with the hairy lip. Gervais is just about to slice at the poor squid when he notices a tear running down its face. Gervais is touched, and admits that he hasn’t the heart to kill the squid.

"Not to worry", says the waiter, and calls out "Hans!!" at which an enormous German bloke comes out of the kitchen. "Sir", says the waiter, "this is Hans, the dishwasher. Hans, kill that squid!" The dishwasher wields a huge rolling pin and is just about to bludgeon the little green squid with the hairy lip when it cringes back and gives a little cry.

"I am sorry sir, I just cannot kill the squid" Hans admits, his lower lip trembling. "Well sir," says the waiter, "it just goes to show…

Hans that do dishes, can be soft as Gervais… With mild green, hairy lipped squid.

Well, it made ME laugh.

Welcome to the throwaway society

Trendy trees add to waste mountain at Christmas | Environment | The Observer

I just read the above article, and quite frankly, it speaks volumes of what our society is becoming. It’s probably not as prevalent as they make out in the article itself, but even so, the notion of people spending all that money on trees and decorations, and then BINNING them, is quite abhorrent to me.

All in the name of fashion - it’s absolutely horrible.

Microsoft folds-in Multimap for ‘$50m’ | The Register

Microsoft folds-in Multimap for ‘$50m’ | The Register

This one both confuses me, and makes sense. It confuses me, because Microsoft are saying buying Multimap will somehow make their offering better. I’m not sure how, as the Live maps interface is actually very slick. It’s fast, easy to use, and I just like it! I used to use Google Maps a lot, but the Live maps are far better now, as far as I’m concerned. I stopped using Multimap long ago, as it was so slow and clunky it was unbearable. In this age of Web 2.0, it felt more like Web 0.1 Beta.

It makes sense to me because Microsoft apparently aren’t pulling many people into Live maps. Fair enough I suppose, many people are saying they’re basically buying Multimap’s customers, which by Microsoft’s standards is pretty much usual fare.

So what do I reckon will happen? As a guess, I think MS will start redirecting users to their own live maps after a while. They’ll probably also move some of the map data across, and start using that, and some of the search technology probably, but otherwise it’ll spell the end of Multimap as we know it.
