Heard it on t’ wireless

Friday, January 18th, 2008

I spotted this on the BBC news site the other day, and for a change, I saw it before the programme was actually on. I recorded it using Media Center from the Freeview Radio 4 channel, as it meant I could listen to it more easily. I even went as far as converting it to an MP3 (the transcode wizard in VLC will do it) and putting it on my iPod to listen to at work. Things happened, and I didn’t get around to listening to it, so I just listened to it now.

One thing struck me whilst I was listening – I kept missing bits. I’d start to listen, but then I’d hear them mention something, and look it up in Wikipedia, or I’d spot something in IRC and reply. Meanwhile, the programme is progressing, and I’m missing stuff.

If it was a TV programme, I’d pay a lot more attention, but for some reason – possibly because I’m just not used to radio programmes as much – I found myself drifting, then having to whizz it back to catch what I’d just missed.

Maybe it’s because there’s no pretty pictures to stop me being distracted. I suppose the only way is to ignore everything and stare at the wall or something. I can understand why TV has been branded the ‘idiot box’ – it really takes no concentration to watch it.

On the move

I was setting up WordPress MU recently to run some blogs at work. Installation was a piece of cake, although I had problems making it do what I wanted. Turned out, I just wasn’t reading the installation screen, and selecting the correct option.

Whilst digging through the online documentation, I found this article on how to put WordPress into the root of the site, but leave the application’s files elsewhere. I’ve had WordPress in a subdirectory since I started using it because I didn’t want all its files clogging up the root.

So I’ve now changed it as per the instructions, and it seems to work. All it’s got really is a simple index.php to include the WordPress header (which includes everything else) and a .htaccess with a VERY small rewrite to put requests in the right place.

Seems to work, anyway!

No… net!

We had no internet connection at work today. Nothing. Nada. Nowt.

I noticed last night that the connection had gone down. My antivirus software (Sophos) updates itself from a server at work, and it was showing a failure. I went to have a look, and noticed I couldn’t see anything. Some further digging on JANET’s service status pages showed 25 other institutions had lost connectivity too.

When I got to work, I was told a call to JANET had found it was a problem with BT’s kit, and nothing to do with us. I didn’t see it being that big a deal.

But it was.

I hadn’t realised how reliant on the web I was! There was various things I needed to do. I needed to research a product, but couldn’t. I needed to research how to change some stuff, but couldn’t. I needed to look up some documentation for something, but – well, you know.

It wasn’t just me. Most of my colleagues were sitting around twiddling thumbs waiting for it to come back. There’s so much stuff now hosted online, instead of being in printed manuals, that there’s a heavy reliance on it. A REALLY heavy reliance. That’s not to say we all look stuff up and know nothing. We end up doing so many new and different things, we’re often researching things.

Even trivial stuff got annoying. We were talking about a recent episode of Heroes, to which I said ‘Just go look it up on IMDB’. Yeah, that won’t work.

I looked again earlier, and noticed it’d come back. At least I’ll be able to find stuff tomorrow.

Media Center. Or Centre.

I wrote up what I did building my Media Center recently. It’s a rambling affair, but then again, it is fairly late!

Are There Really Continents of Floating Garbage? | The Daily Galaxy: News from Planet Earth & Beyond

If this is true, it’s really a horrible thing. Astonishing to think so much rubbish could be floating about out there. Makes me wonder why we’ve not heard of it sooner though.
