It’s my birthday. But there was also a load of other things that took place:
- 1957 – Launch of Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth.
- 1976 – Official launch of the Intercity 125 High Speed Train (HST).
- 1985 – Free Software Foundation is founded in Massachusetts, USA.
Why’d I pick those out? Well, there was a lot more that happened besides those events, but I found it intriguing that they are vaguely relevant to me.
Sputnik because I’m quite interested in the space race, the intercity 125 launch because I’ve always had an on-again-off-again fascination with railways (and indeed, anything big and with an engine), and the launch of the Free Software Foundation because I’m a big computer nut, and the FSF are major contributors to Linux and other related projects.
I daresay anybody could go through the list for their birthday and pull out similar things. There’s plenty of things on the list totally unconnected to me, but those ones particularly stood out to me, especially Sputnik.
Maybe (doubtful) there’s some cosmic connection between what happens on the day we’re born, and who we are? I suppose that’s what astrologers are constantly harping on about, but there’s a slightly more concrete link here between something happening, rather than some planet being in alignment with the moon.
Until proven otherwise though, it’s just a nice coincidence for now.
