As for scripts, it's inevitable there will be a thorough approach to managing problems which drives particular troubleshooting steps. Otherwise they'd be blind! I don't think I'd be brave enough to go with a VPS. I find a semi-dedicated server offers enough 'oomph' with the added-value of not having to muck about with root level configuration.
