Guitars

I have six guitars: two acoustics and three electrics and a bass. I also have a Mandolin, and a six-string banjo.

Washburn D46SCE

Washburn D46SCE
Body: North American Quilted Ash. Solid Spruce Top.
Frets: 20
Pickup: Bridge
Controls: B-Band A3 preamp
Hardware: Grover Tuners

This is my second Acoustic guitar. I really do enjoy playing it. It came with some fairly light strings when I first got it, and I managed to break them quickly, so I put on a heavier set, but it made it much, much harder to play comfortably. I’m now using a Dean Markley 12-54 set. They play nicely.

Aria TA-40

Aria TA-40

Body: Maple, arched top, back and sides
Frets: 22
Pickups: OH-1F, OH-1H, Humbuckers
Controls: 2x Volume, 2x Tone, 3-way pickup selection
Hardware: VGB-1 Bridge, VGT-1 Tailpiece

This is SUCH a nice guitar to just noodle about on. A lovely, mellow sound. I can get a really nice chiming sound out of it. The action was very high on it when I got it, so I adjusted it, but I managed to get it too low on the bass strings, so I was getting terrible fret buzz on the low E. That was about six months ago, and I’ve yet to fix it! I will though. Honest!

Yamaha RGX121S

Yamaha RGX121S

Body: Alder
Neck: Bolt-on maple
Fingerboard: Rosewood, 350mm (13.75 inch) radius
Frets: 22
Scale length: 648mm (25.5 inch)
Pickups: Two Ceramic humbuckers, one Ceramic single-coil
Controls: Five-position pickup selector, master volume, master tone
Bridge: Vintage-type vibrato

This guitar is just great for ‘rawk’! It’s an Ibanez copy, and traditionally it’d be playing Metal and the like, but it’s a pretty good all-rounder anyway. It’s got a nice bite to it, but it plays fairly nice clean too.

Encore Electro-Acoustic

Encore

Body: Laminate woods with spruce top, nato back, sides and neck.
Fingerboard: Rosewood.
Frets: 20
Length: 102cm.
Pickup: Built-in piezo
Controls: pick-upsliderfor tone and volume.
Hardware: Individual covered chrome machine heads.
Fitted with USA made strings.

This was my first guitar. The ‘el-cheapo Argos’ guitar! I’ve still got it though. It actually doesn’t sound too bad, if it has nice strings on it. The inbuilt pickup is useless though. I tend to keep this guitar in either D tuning, or half a step down. I’d been in some odd open tunings too. It’s my experimentation guitar these days.

Epiphone Les Paul Special II

Epiphone Les Paul Special II

Pickups: 2 Open Coil Humbuckers Hardware: Chrome
Scale: 24.75 in.
Nut Width: 1.68 in.
Neck Joint: Bolt
Neck Material: Mahogany
Fingerboard: Rosewood/Dot
Body Material: Laminated Alder/Maple

I never got into playing this guitar as much as any of my others. The setup is just all wrong, so it’s not fun to play. Having said that, it’s still a good guitar. The neck is a little unstable, but then it is a bolt-on, so that’s to be expected really. If I ever get around to setting up my Aria, I’ll do this too…

I bought this bass second hand. I rarely play it, but I do like playing around on it.

Mention a mandolin, and you think old men in a folk band. Usually, anyway. Mandolins are pretty cool though, and I enjoy playing this one. It does need re-stringing now though. The strings it came with were awful, and never tuned right. Playing mandolin is odd – some chords are super-simple, whilst others put your fingers into such odd positions. Still, it is fun to play.

Stagg/Florian BJM30 6-string banjo

bb2f_1-r

Resonator: Mahogany

Bracket hooks: 30 (flat type)
Top head: 11″ REMO(tm) White Coated

Armrest: nickel-plated Brass
Neck: Nato/ 26″ scale length

It’s a 6-string banjo, which means it’s incredibly easy to play. Fun too!
